CHARACTER

In the book, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" there are several characters that I am drawn to. Perhaps the one I am drawn to the most is Dr. Jekyll. I feel that this character is hiding something and that secret involves Mr. Hyde. Even in the first few chapters, you can sense that Dr. Jekyll does not trust anyone, not even his friend Mr. Utterson. He also is someone who likes to think outside the box. His theories however, are not understood and people think that he is crazy. This exemplifies the way life was in the 1800s, where people never wanted to try new things and people who had mental illness were thought to have been impossible to heal.

  1. I feel the same way about Jekyll ;however, isn't the only person who thought his scientific ideas are crazy are Lanyon. I don't believe anyone else knows really about his science, not even poole or the servants. Utterson only finds out after he reads Lanyon's narrative. Dr.Jekyll does seem to have some mental problems, but it seems to be just because of Hyde.

  2. Scientific advances are a scarey thing! It is possible that Stevenson was trying to show the lack of acceptance and the down-right disgust that society had for new scientific discoveries. People seem to prefer Dr. Jekyll the secretive persona, similar to the way society felt about the safety in the secrets of the universe staying secret!

  3. I agree that the most unusual charectar is Jekyll. After reading a couple chapters in the novel, we were able to coclude that Jekyll was actually Hyde, so your thought about their connection was relevant. I think it is sad that people thought that he was crazy. If scientists and others supported him, he would have been more succesful in his scientific discoveries. He would have also recovered from his gloomy manner. His murders however seem to confuse me... Why would he want to commit them? Hopefully we will find out as we read on, as we will be able to discover more interesting facts about Jekyll and his scientific discovery.
